50 Golborne, a contemporary art gallery based in London, has been supporting talents from the African continent and its diaspora since 2015. It has been noted early on for its interest in the convergences between fine art practices and those of craft.
Exhibiting regularly at Collect over the years, the gallery has challenged categorisations and hierarchisations to present art practices that reflect on the political, economic and societal role of craftmakers within a visual art discourse.
For Collect 2023, the gallery will focus on soft and hard sculpture with works by Sanaa Gateja (Uganda) whose sumptuous ‘tapestries’ are made from recycled paper, and functional wood sculptures/chairs by Balla Niang (Senegal) who has been working with unusual locally sourced materials to create the anthropomorphic, poetic objects that are his signature. Both artists’ works are in prestigious global institutions.
