Cake has far more significance than just something to eat: it’s the invitation to sit with loved ones and chat, the opportunity to just … pause. A symbol of something so normal, the ritual of going for afternoon tea, was, for us, fragile, gone in an instant. Now, post-lockdowns, we can see each other again: it’s something so precious.
Combining casting and fusing techniques, Sarah Brown has recreated the textures and appearance of cakes in glass – first cupcakes, then macarons and now a full patisserie.
This current work is also a metaphor of Brown’s creative practice, the love of exploring, developing and perfecting techniques, her total obsession with detail, and passion for the material, much like the hours spent perfecting recipes in the kitchen.
