Crafts CouncilDirectoryElla MerrimanRush Basketmaker, Designer and Artist London, EnglandBasketryWeavingWebsiteE-mailInstagramAboutInfoNewsSustainabilityI am an artist, designer and craftswoman who works in rush, a traditional basket weaving material. My work ponders the disassociation between so many of us and the natural world and explores the relationship between humans and plants. I create bespoke pieces for interior spaces as well as sculptural artworks and homeware. As no human is the same, neither are the rush stems and I choose to respect each one, working symbiotically with the plant to craft my works. It is such an honour to receive this acknowledgment of my craft and I moved into a studio at Cockpit Bloomsbury in September. It is wonderfully inspiring to be surrounded by such accomplished craftspeople and incredible to be based in Central London. Also included in my award is mentoring and business support which I am really looking forward to taking advantage of. I love working with rush because it is completely biodegradable and I am able to harvest my own materials in the UK. As a maker I feel a huge responsibility to create in harmony with the Earth and to ensure that I treat my materials with the utmost respect. I try to use all elements of my rush stems and the few that cannot be used are composted in my garden to facilitate future plant growth.
