Beate Gegenwart engages with ideas of place, identity, dislocation and belonging, language, the small wearable and architectural space.
Her materials – vitreous enamel on steel, patinated, etched copper and brass as well as paper – bring to life meditations on landscape, movement, rhythms and water. She usually works in series and most of her pieces are intended for the wall. Often a particular series is accompanied by small-scale works such as tiny vessels or items to be worn on the body.
