Chrissie Freeth Tapestry artist West Yorkshire, England
My work is usually large scale and take months to weave. I use hand-dyed wool and a palette heavily influenced by the muted colours of the Yorkshire landscape. My work is narrative, bold, unfussy and studded with personal symbolism. It is inspired by academic research of pre-Renaissance tapestries but reimagined for contemporary relevance. At the loom I reshape and confront my own memories and seek to capture a more universal female experience.

Thrilled to have been awarded a prestigious travelling Fellowship by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. I'll be going to the US, France, Belgium and Switzerland to study medieval tapestries and their relevance to contemporary practice.

I'm having a solo exhibition of tapestries at Ripon Cathedral in May 2020. It will showcase work completed since my WCMT Fellowship into medieval tapestry & will be a great opportunity to show contemporary tapestries in such an ancient building.
