Shetland Smookie jumper
These modern Fair Isle style sweaters are designed and made here in Hoswick, in the South Mainland of the Shetland Islands.
I spliced the influence of the all-over (patterned) ganseys, which Shetland is known for, with details taken from the simple, stand-up neck, smocks worn by fishermen around the coasts here.
Inset storm cuffs are an extra detail for cosiness.
Each jumper is carefully made by local knitwear experts.

Shetland Smookie jumper, Astrid JohnstonThe stand-up neck is taken from the simple and useful smocks worn by fishermen. Traditionally made in sacking or canvas, here the neckline is translated into knit – a birdseye stitch lined with stripes inside.
