Upcycled denim plant hanger by Emily Otchie

Learn how to transform old textiles into a macrame holder for your plants

As part of the Summer Craft Challenge, we asked fibre textile artist Emily Otchie to create a low-cost activity for makers of all ages and abilities. Follow the step-by-step on this page or download to print off and start cheering up your indoor or outdoor spaces.

You will need the following materials:

Old denim jeans or any other fabric you wish to repurpose
Scissors
Plant pot

2. Tie a knot to leave a tassel at the bottom of the plant hanger.
1. Cut the denim into 8 strips, 170 x 2cm each.

4. Take 1 strip and tie it to another.
3. Tie 2 strips together in the middle of the plant pot. Repeat with the other 6 strips.

6. Tie a loop at the top so you can hang up your plant hanger.
5. Repeat this on the remaining strips to create the hanger for the plant pot.

Emily is a textile design graduate that previously specialised in knitwear design and is now a multi-disciplined textile artist that use a range of techniques in her work including macramé, embroidery and crochet. She aims to use sustainable materials such as raffia and off-cut jersey yarn to create textile art that is joyful and beautiful for homes as well as children rooms.
