For my project I focused on all three aspects of ‘Material World’, these being ‘Creative Mending’ was Sashiko, ‘Renewable Materials’ was used in my nature stitch piece and ‘Reclaim and Reuse’ included my plastic flower which was linked to wildflowers, my fashion design and outcome.
For my final piece I chose to focus on the theme of reducing landfill because I found it to be the one that would allow me to help the environment and combine different types of ideas into one.
For my final piece I was inspired by the artists Carrie Ann Schumacher, Benjamin Benmoyal, Alexander McQueen. In addition, I researched different techniques and processes that link to fashion and textiles.
I have used many different fashions and textile-based materials. For example, the body of my dress came from an old, recycled dress that belonged to my mother, the decorations and decals were made my me through crocheting recycled yarn
The shape of my design is contoured to the body of the mannequin, the shoulder pads have a triangular design to them, and the decals are in the shapes of flowers and leaves on vines. The colour palette is quite simplistic with gold, silver, blue and black being the colour that make up my design.
I would say that the materials I have used are very effective because they blend well with each other. There are aspects that clearly show the fabrics age and previous use and therefore show how they have been kept out of a landfill.
To develop the piece further I would add a wider variety of decorations and slightly expand the colour palette of the design. I believe that adding reds and possibly purples might create a fuller piece. – Jack Barnard
