Learner statement:

We decided to create a sustainable recycling project using recycled ocean plastic as this is a huge problem our generation has caused. We live near the sea so thought it was even more important to us. We were inspired by Addidas who make trainers from ocean plastic. We thought we could help with two problems with our design, reducing ocean waste and help homeless people or people who need emergency shelter. The scale model worked really well. We couldn't show is how the front and back would slide in. This is because the model was a bit too small. We made templates to get the joints in the right position, but the material wasn’t think enough, so for the model we decided to glue it together. We would have to think about how heavy full scale shelter would be and this is a area where we might need to make modifications to try and make it lighter. Overall we are all really pleased with the outcome and worked really well as a team. – Matis Bouveret, Team Leader

Judges' comments:

it was clear that the students at Belfairs Academy worked well together as a group
we liked that they tried to find a creative and unexpected solution to an environmental issue that relates to their local area and resulted in a solution to a real world problem
they used a number of different processes effectively
we liked that the submission clearly shows the group's whole process from design, modelling and making through to the final object
