Learner statement:
For my first piece I did a ‘Reclaimed and Reused’ front cover. I started by having a piece of fabric with patterns on it then outlined the pattern with a yellow and blue colour to make it stand out. For ‘Renewable Materials’ I did a stitched nature piece with fabric, twigs, threads and glue, I think this piece came out good. For my final design layout (reclaim and reuse combined with renewable world) I did a wired bowl with twigs, copper wire, copper rings.
I picked these themes for my final piece as I really enjoy doing 3D work and by using the recycled materials I did helped reduce landfill and waste management.
I found an artist called Andy Goldsworthy who uses nature outside. I chose this artist because I like the shaped and patterns. I realised that he doesn’t work with wires, so I located some references to go off.
I used sustainable recycled materials including, electrical copper wire, copper rings from plumbers, threads and fabric, I also used twigs. I started by doing a rough piece just to get a rough idea of the shape and the size I wanted to do for my final piece. Along the way I learnt joining skills and gained better skills.
I really like my final piece; I like the size, the patterns, the different materials on it and I especially like the fabric with the stitched pattern on the bottom and although I added bits of twigs and rings to it, it still looks like my references and looks like a proper bowl.
I think the wire is very effective as it looks different as it is also very sturdy and what makes it stand out is the stitched fabric on the bottom as the colours of the yellow pops.
I think the bowl represents my chosen themes of reducing landfill and using renewable materials as the twigs I found, and threads and materials were deadstock as were the wires.
If I had more time, I would have added more wires going down the bowl giving it more of a bowl effect, and I could have added some broken pieces of pottery to add more of a range of materials like a landfill of random rubbish. – Jack Hulme
