Championed by Mahatma Gandhi as a cloth that could help India find freedom under British colonial rule, khadi is a handwoven fabric crafted from natural fibres such as cotton or wool. Khadi is also the title of a multimedia installation by artist Bharti Parmar, who for this discussion joins Uthra Rajgopal – curator of Crafts Council’s Cotton: labour, land and body exhibition – to talk more about the work, and how it explores the ties between India, Lancashire and the cotton industry.
This talk was the second of four talks during the Stories of Cotton symposium: a half-day event on 2 December 2022, supported by the Bagri Foundation. You can watch all four talks here.
The symposium delved into the themes underpinning the exhibition Cotton: labour, land and body at the Crafts Council Gallery.
