Dorcas Casey, Nico Conti and Leora Honeyman all have unusual practices that are taking the nature of working with clay into unchartered territory. Each was awarded a Fresh Talent residency at the British Ceramics Biennial in 2021, with the opportunity to create a new piece for the 2023 edition. In an online discussion on 5 October 2023, they told Crafts editor Debika Ray about how the opportunity has impacted their work and the direction of their careers.
Casey shared how her fine art background informs an interest in making detailed surface textures. She honed the technique for a Staffordshire Pottery-style figurine while on a month-long stay in Denmark. Conti, who uses computer modelling and 3D-printing to create lace-like forms in porcelain, was most inspired by Wedgwood Jasperware. Honeyman tapped into 'universe of ceramic knowledge' Stoke is famous for during her residency, and will use the technical skills she's gained to expand her practice which deals with the interplay of digital and ceramic processes.
