Paperclay is a non-fire, air-drying, sculpting compound. Despite its name, there is no actual clay in this material and the chief ingredient is recycled paper pulp.
On this informal, drop-in day of workshops and demonstrations, the public is invited to come and explore the properties of paper clay for themselves. Christine will be demonstrating throughout the day, answering questions, and offering people the opportunity to create their own small sculptures. People will be able to stay for as little or as long as they wish. For those who wish to explore the medium further, Christine will share her own paperclay recipe to be made at home from low cost, readily available ingredients.
Christine Pike, MA is an international sculptor and tutor with many years of experience. Over the years she has become aware that many people would love to learn how to sculpt but are either intimidated by working in clay or deterred by the high costs involved and lack of access to a kiln. She has spent the past year experimenting with various recipes for making a paperclay that will yield satisfying results for beginners and experienced sculptors alike.
Working with paperclay can be beneficial for mental wellbeing, as the process of construction requires you to slow down and relax into the flow of making. However, this unhurried approach also allows time for planning and thinking. And, if time and attention are short, pieces can be worked on and put aside, to be returned to later. It is an incredibly versatile and forgiving medium.
Christine is grateful to the Norfolk Arts Project Fund for helping to fund this event.
