With origins dating back centuries, paper cutting has been practised in cultures and societies around the world. Using scissors and knives, an image is carved into paper creating a delicate and intricate piece of art.
In this free, 1 hour 30 minute session, you will be introduced to a brief history of paper cutting, the foundations of how to begin cutting paper for yourself and some of the many artists pushing the boundaries of paper today.
The session will be led by Tom Bevan, the paper cutter behind Paper by Tom. Tom first trained in paper cutting at university, under the guidance of Lu Shengzhong, and has since branched out to weaving, sculpting and binding paper. By sharing some of the tips and techniques he has learnt over 10 years of paper cutting, Tom hopes to give you the confidence to experiment and go on to create your own pieces of work.
Two weeks before the session, you will receive a PDF of the steps and designs the group will work on together. All you need to do in advance is print the design out on some paper of your choice.
What you’ll need:
- A craft knife or scalpel
- A self-healing cutting mat
- Access to a printer to print your pdf guide
- Five or more sheets of paper (60-100gm) or more
If you can’t access these materials, Tom can put together a pack of basic tools and printed material for you to work with at a cost of £5.00. To order a pack please visit http://www.paperbytom.co.uk
