Ceramic artist Katrin Moye seeks to identify parallels between aspects of contemporary life and their equivalents in history. Her sometimes tongue-in-cheek wheel-thrown and handbuilt, intricately decorated earthenware vessels are made within the context of historical European ceramics, with a particular focus on the styles of Delftware and Italian Maiolica. For Collect Open, she has produced a series of large-scale pharmacy jars in the Italian maiolica style of the 1500-1600s – taking their cue from antique examples found at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Courtauld Gallery and the Science Museum – to reflect her experience of menopause, a momentous event in womens’ lives through the ages, but one that has been under-represented in our culture until very recently.
