Kyra Cane’s collection of daring, monumental porcelain vessels explore the notion that what is felt and thought can be preserved in an inanimate object; the experience of ‘being’ in a place can be evoked and made permanent through the exploration of extraordinary materials and processes. The elemental process of changing fragments of earth into fine-walled, hollow ceramic structures has been honed over decades. Inextricably linking form and surface, she wraps marks around voluminous thrown structures, creating strong and fragile shapes that simultaneously embrace light and air. She draws and marks the surface of her porcelain pieces, interrogating, erasing and defining that which she has created, in pursuit of radical transformation in the extreme heat of her kiln. This work is part of her ‘Challenging Boundaries’ project.
