Alison Rees is a London-based artist who makes compositions of porcelain pages to tell abstract stories of person and place – of that which might be overlooked. She has developed a unique method of working that enables her to make delicate, thin pages in clay. For Collect Open, Rees has transformed and elevated the common-place drainage grill, injecting it with flights of fancy, colour and scale. Her graphic aesthetic and unique imaginative perspective tell a story of joyful beauty from unexpected places. The compositions exhibited are her largest to date. Alongside the material properties of porcelain that suggest lightness and strength, Rees uses borders, repetition, framework, colour and the grid to create a distinctive ceramic language which is all her own.
