Each piece has its own story: a personal encounter, a news article or an endangered species alert for example. The artwork, original drawing and mark-making, is translated into digital files by the artist and carefully hand-woven in a mixture of sustainably sourced yarns, chosen for their colour and inherent fibre properties. Fiona is happy to discuss commission ideas.Fiona J SperrynCornwall, EnglandDragonfly 'Aeshna cyanea' (detail), Fiona J SperrynThe Southern Hawker dragonfly visits the studio. A two-part hand-woven hanging developed from original drawing and textural mark-making. Mixed fibres.Orangutan 'Pongo pygmaeus', adult (detail), Fiona J SperrynFor this piece, Fiona worked from her own photographs, taken at an orangutan sanctuary in the steamy forests of Malaysian Borneo. She translated her original drawings into this hand-woven tapestry artwork on a jacquard loom in her studio in Cornwall. In a process akin to painting with yarn, each of the four shuttles she threw for this piece held conscientiously selected natural fibres - linen, bamboo, wool and hemp. Off the loom, the piece was carefully hand-finished to create the texture reminiscent of orangutan fur. This piece won Highly Commended in the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation’s Wildlife Artist of the Year 2020 competition. The hanging measures approximately 49cm wide by 78cm long. Seahorse 'Hippocampus hippocampus', Fiona J SperrynOne of the two seahorses native to UK waters and whose habitat is under threat. Mixed fibres, stylishly framed behind protective UV art glass.
